A study conducted by NPR with the help of Arizona State University found that the voice of the ‘Sky’ personal assistant is most similar to the voice of Scarlett Johansson. The specialists used AI programs that were intended to analyze the similarity of voices.
They compared recordings from various demonstrations at OpenAI’s meeting with around 600 actresses and found that Johansson’s voice sounded more similar to Sky than 98% of the other actresses. They wanted to find out whether there are any “vocal tracts”, or the size of the throat, mouth, and nasal passages that give a distinct voice quality. They also found out that the tract length of Sky and Scarlett Johansson is approximately the same.
Does OpenAI sound really like a Hollywood actor?
They compare audio from multiple demos at the Open Al event with the voices of about 600 actresses and determine that Johansson’s voice is closer to Sky’s than 98% of other actresses.
The researchers then dissected the voices for probable “vocal tracts,” or what size throat, mouth, and nasal passages would yield that certain kind of voice. Notably, the researchers revealed that Sky and Johansson had the same tract length.
“Our assessment indicates that whereas the two voices are alike, they are probably not the same,” said Berisha, who oversaw the voice comparison at the College of Health Solutions and the College of Engineering at the school.
Sky’s voice is a slightly higher pitch than Johannson’s and she is slightly more breathy than Sky, the team mentioned.
The researchers also want to establish that ‘Sky’ also resembles other Hollywood celebrities such as Anne Hathaway and Keri Russell. According to NPR report, “The analysis of Sky often rated Hathaway and Russell as being even more similar to the Al than Johansson. ”
