OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT search as an open challenge to compete against Google. Specifically, a portion of ChatGPT’s users can now use ChatGPT search, OpenAI revealed today. While it quietly could search the web for several months, today’s update is part of OpenAI’s broader shift into search with AI.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search
The tool, which will be called ChatGPT Search, will allow the chatbot’s users to seek timely information as they would on the web and receive answers that include sources linked to news publishers and other data providers, as stated by OpenAI on Thursday. The company released a basic version of the product called SearchGPT in July as a stand-alone app from ChatGPT but with a limited group of users.
The search feature leverages Microsoft’s Bing search system, and OpenAI has even broadened its content source with more large publication partners such as News Corp and the Associated Press. Such an expansion makes ChatGPT slightly resemble a conventional search engine model, thus making it nearer to Google competitors.
These new search features, relying on OpenAI’s 4o model, will be turned on starting with paid ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers on Thursday for mobile and web. All the above features are planned to be rolled out within the coming weeks to OpenAI’s enterprise and education customers and the general public in the next few months.
