ChatGPT itself does not function in the ‘machine learning mode’ in the same way that you are training it every time you use it. It has been trained up to September 2021 and is a pre-trained model based on GPT-4 architecture. ChatGPT has been trained on text data that is available on the internet. This includes books, articles, websites, and any other written material that will have passed through the publisher and is available to the public.

  • Training Process: It was trained using the supervised learning approach in which the model was trained to predict the next word given the previous words in a sequence of words. This one uses transformer neural networks thus making it capable of producing text like that of a human being. 
  • Fixed Model: When you chat with ChatGPT, you are chatting with a model that has been trained and is not updated. It does not learn at all when it comes to dealing with the specific encounters within the course of the conversation. 
  • Response Generation: Therefore, when presented with the input, ChatGPT answers based on the patterns and data that were programmed into the model during training. 
  • Fine-Tuning: Occasionally models like ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on specific datasets for those applications but this is done by the creators and not the consumers. 


ChatGPT Model Updates

The model can be updated from time to time, and new data will be added to the model or to adjust the model for better performance. While the model does not discover patterns in real-time, the users’ feedback can be received by the developers to improve the subsequent versions of the model. This can be done by reducing biases, improving accuracy as well as increasing the amount of information available. ChatGPT does not train in real-time from the interactions. Each session is concluded and the model does not proceed with what it had learned in the previous session.
