Gemini is going to take over the Google Assistant, and soon, it is going to get the significant feature that was exclusive to Assistant. In the near future, users can have a Google Home extension in Gemini app to control their smart home. It is currently active now for anyone who is in the Public Preview for Google Home on Android and will expand slowly over the week.
According to blog post, Google Home Extension in Gemini is available to Public Preview program so you can test it. It also means it’ll be coming to the app for all users soon, as the Public Preview is the last stop new features go through before release.
Google Home Extension in Gemini
The integration of Gemini with the Google Home extension allows the latter to directly control Google Home-compatible connected hardware as a result of the launch in the Public Preview stages for Android users. Here’s what this new feature brings:
- Faster Response Times: Previous interactions require the user to command Google Assistant to relay it to Gemini instead of directly interacting with Gemini
- The updated system minimizes this roundtrip and allows Gemini to serve user requests more promptly, improving the effectiveness of smart home management.
- Natural Language Commands: Everyone can interact with Gemini through a natural language approach, thus, making commands easily understandable.
Google has effectively migrated from Allo to Gemini, a move that comes close to recent changes Samsung has made to its Bixby assistant. Like the latest version of Gemini, the new Bixby now integrates large language models (LLMs) to interpret both voice commands and sequences. Nevertheless, Samsung has developed a much more potent Bixby, which, however, has not yet seen the light of smartphones or tablets – a distinctive feature.
To use these features, fire up the Google Home app on your Android smartphone. Press the Settings button, and from the list that drops down click Public Preview. From there you should click on the Join Public Preview button to get your account in there. You should be able to get access to the Google Home extension for Gemini earliest.
