During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in San Francisco, Apple introduced its internal AI toolset under the brand Apple Intelligence. It also unveiled the inclusion of ChatGPT into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, whereby users would be able to summon the services of the OpenAI chatbot to provide straightforward answers to questions. Meta AI could also become one of the third-party chatbots that can work on Apple devices.
Apple And Meta Discussion
A recent report by The Wall Street Journal highlighted that Apple met with Meta to discuss a potential partnership between the two companies. Quoting unidentified sources, the report said that the tie-up may lead to Apple incorporating the social media giant’s AI models into operating systems of devices, in a similar manner to the iPhone maker partnering with OpenAI. The move is not shocking since Apple recently announced that it will be looking at ways of integrating more third-party AI models into its ecosystem. Specifically, a recent article pointed out that Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude AI were some of the possibilities that could also be used with iPhone, iPad, and Mac products.
ChatGPT integration is presented as an additional proposition complementary to its internal Apple Intelligence. When the feature is launched, the users will be able to request the OpenAI chatbot for a given query that is more appropriate for a large language model (LLM). However, one doesn’t have to register for an OpenAI account to use the various features available on the website.
There is information that Apple wants to encourage as many users as possible to purchase and use their devices, while OpenAI will be attempting to attract more people to subscribe to ChatGPT. However, it remains uncertain whether, if the Meta deal is closed, it will have a similar structure.
