Google has officially unveiled a new project called Gemini to help the learning process in schools among teenagers who use accounts at school. This AI-based tool will enable teenagers to have access to several features aimed at enhancing their learning potential. Specifically, the chatbot will be targeted at teenagers with educational profiles in over 100 countries and will have an English-speaking shell. During the ISTE 2024 education conference, Google unveiled several new Chrome and Gemini features designed to enrich educational technologies and materials. These updates are intended to benefit students and instructors, in terms of being inclusive and student-centered. Gemini for teen students in over one hundred countries. 

New AI tools for Google Workspace for Education

  • Within the next few months, Google plans on launching Gemini English to teen students in over 100 countries for free. This will include enterprise data protections with IT admin opt-in and Google will not use data from chats to train its AI models. 
  • The Read Along in Classroom improvements. Read Along is a Google Workspace for Education solution that employs AI to assist children with their reading. Google has recently begun testing a new feature known as Read Along which enables teachers to create stories based on the particular needs of students. And it will make Read Along available globally while it currently supports only English. But Spanish is coming soon as well. 
  • Google is also introducing Gemini to Google Classroom, still in pilot, and based on Google’s LearnLM language models which are informed by education research. Teachers will have the chance to divide content into different groups of students. 
  • Google Vids is an application for creating videos within Google Workspace; Google plans to release a version without generative AI for Google Workspace for Education Plus later this year. Google Vids with generative AI can be added with a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on.

Gemini is fine-tuned to recognize content suitable for teen users and initiate policies and guardrails not to allow improper responses, including prohibited or restricted products, such as substances. To accommodate teenagers, the onboarding in Gemini requires an AI Literacy video which is approved by ConnectSafely and Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) containing useful tips on safe generative AI usage. Soon, students will be able to construct knowledge using another customized version of Gemini based on LearnLM known as Learning Coach. 

Soon OpenStax and Data Commons extensions will assist students in mastering materials from trusted information sources. It also highlighted several accessibility enhancements for Chromebooks as well as the Chrome browser. This includes the read-aloud option in Chrome’s reading mode, text capture from PDFs in Chrome for screen reading, and later this year: the firm’s Project Gameface. The Reading Mode side panel in desktop Chrome has been bringing in a new Read Aloud feature ever since the Android app received a similar TTS feature.
