Documents in its recent filings reveal that OpenAI is eyeing a massive spike in the price point of its AI subscription, possibly going up to $44 per month over the next five years. If that happens, ChatGPT Plus Subscription could, actually, be one of the costliest AI models to engage with out in the market today. There’s no clear signal that there will be new subscription tiers for folks who can’t afford nearly $50 a month.
If OpenAI decides to raise its prices, as it planned to do, ChatGPT Plus subscription customers might simply jump ship and consider alternatives like Google and Microsoft’s AI offerings at $20 per month.
However, no assurance can be given to the effect that these competitors will maintain their current prices in the future. This comes right after streaming services raised subscription fees, making this a bigger trend in the subscription global digital services.
It also follows an increase in subscription rates by many streaming platforms over the past couple of years. That was further compounded with YouTube Premium receiving a massive increase in global markets, where some markets have seen an almost 40 percent increase in price. This comes after Disney unveiled a series of hikes for Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, and Hulu in August 2024.
